Rainy conditions
Grevenmacher, themselves making their Champions League bow having won their first domestic league crown last season, had the better of the first half in a game played in often rainy conditions. However, their only clear-cut chance was a saved lob from French midfield player Kevin Martin, recently signed from FC Avenir Beggen, and Leotar held on until the break.
Visitors threaten
Leotar began to threaten the Grevenmacher goal in the second period, but were denied by home custodian Jonathan Joubert. At the other end, Ahmed El Auoad ended the match playing as a lone Grevenmacher striker while captain Daniel Huss and new German signing Marco Toppmöller dropped back to help keep out the visitors in midfield. Nevertheless, the hosts did go close when Martin had a fierce drive from inside the area blocked.
Return leg
The sides will meet again next Wednesday in the return leg at the Police stadium in Trebinije, with the eventual victors progressing to play Czech side SK Slavia Praha.
