Milan capture veteran Cafu

AC Milan have signed AS Roma defender Cafu, the only player to feature in three FIFA World Cup finals.

Momentous achievements
The Brazilian, who turned 33 on Saturday, is one of the finest right-backs of all time. The only player to feature in three FIFA World Cup finals, Cafu was a winner against Italy in 1994 and last year captained South America's finest to glory in Korea/Japan, a victory which made amends for the 3-0 defeat by France in 1998.

Road to stardom
Cafu, who was a free agent, leaves Roma after six years at the Stadio Olimpico in which he cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting defenders in world football. His road to stardom began with São Paulo FC, his hometown club, whom he left for Real Zaragoza.

Title success
After a season in Spain, Cafu returned to Brazil with SE Palmeiras, staying for two years before being enticed to the Eternal City. The highlight of his lengthy spell at Roma came in 2001 when Fabio Capello's side lifted the Scudetto. In total Cafu played 162 times in Serie A for the Giallorossi, scoring five goals.

Japan move
In January Cafu was reported to have agreed a deal to join Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos this summer. However, he decided against moving to the Far East, preferring to remain in Italy despite only being offered half the salary he would have commanded in the J League.

'Great club'
Cafu said: "Milan are a great club and to play in the Rossoneri shirt will be a great pleasure for me. I'm really proud that they have chosen me. Now I hope that I can use this chance in the best possible way."

Brazilian contingent
Cafu joins fellow Brazilians Dida, Roque Junior, Serginho and Rivaldo at Milan, who won their sixth European Champion Clubs' Cup on 28 May by defeating Juventus FC on penalties at Old Trafford.
