Juventus win Milan rematch

Juventus FC lifted the Italian Super Cup after beating AC Milan 5-3 on penalties in New York.

New York venue
The Giants stadium in New York was the venue for the clubs' first meeting since Milan defeated the Turin side 3-2 on penalties on that heady night at Old Trafford. Once again 120 minutes were not enough to separate the sides after David Trezeguet's strike cancelled out Andrea Pirlo's extra-time penalty for Milan.

Silver goal rule
Ultimately, the silver goal rule kept Juventus alive in the match. With just one minute of the first period of extra time remaining, Pirlo converted a soft, high chip over a diving Gianluigi Buffon after referee Pierluigi Collina adjudged that Mark Iuliano had fouled Massimo Ambrosini. Juventus were staring defeat in the face, but seconds later, French international Trezeguet was on hand to tap the ball into the net after goalkeeper Cristian Abbiati blocked a header from defender Nicola Legrottaglie.

No mistake
Juventus missed three penalties out of five in Manchester but here they made no mistakes, while Buffon saved a spot-kick from Milan substitute Cristian Brocchi. Veteran defender Ciro Ferrara then stepped up to convert the winning penalty for Juventus, and in doing so secured the 17th major trophy of his career and his fifth Italian Super Cup.

'This is football'
Buffon was named man of the match for his heroics. "In Manchester I saved two penalties and we lost. Today I saved just one and we won. But that's football," said the Italian international. "I want to congratulate my team-mates because after Pirlo's goal I was sure we had no more chances to win this game."

'Really satisfied'
Meanwhile, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was philosophical in defeat. "Both sides played a good match," he said. "I'm really satisfied with the way my team played. We lost our concentration just for a minute after Pirlo's goal which gave Juve the chance to equalise."

'New, long season'
Juventus coach Marcello Lippi said: "I think we deserved this victory. Both Milan and Juve tried to win this match for the whole 120 minutes but in my opinion we created more chances than them. However, it's not revenge for us. This match had nothing to do with the Champions League final. This was just the first important match of a new, long season."

Around 54,000 in attendance
The event was played out in front of around 54,000 spectators and was the third time the Italian Super Cup has been staged outside Italy. In 1993 Milan defeated Torino Calcio 1-0 in Washington, D.C. while the Bianconeri won 2-1 against Parma AC in Tripoli, Libya, last year.
