Former champions Dortmund fall

Dream start
Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer chose an attacking 4-3-3 lineup whereas his Club Brugge counterpart Trond Sollied, defending a 2-1 lead, utilised a more conservative 4-4-2. After only three minutes though that lead had gone as Marcio Amoroso pounced on a blunder from Brugge goalkeeper Tomislav Butina, who failed to collect a back-pass from Peter Van der Heyden.

Butina atonement
Dortmund could have doubled their lead soon after but Butina atoned for his earlier error by denying Tomáš Rosický with a superb diving save. In the 27th minute the Belgians drew level though when Andrés Mendoza's free-kick curled round the Dortmund wall and found its way into the net despite the desperate attempts of Roman Weidenfeller and Amoroso to keep it out.

Brugge in control
From then on the away side were in control. Two minutes before half-time Weidenfeller made an important save from Gert Verheyen, who had been picked out by Mendoza after a clever one-two with Alin Stoica. Seconds later Amoroso went close at the other end.

Dortmund desperation
Twelve minutes into the second half Rosický fed Otto Addo but the winger's volleyed strike was pushed over the bar by Butina. Thereafter the hosts created little and with 15 minutes to go Sammer threw on striker Ewerthon for defender Ahmed Madouni in a desperate bid for the goal his side needed to take the game into extra time.

Ewerthon duly delivered in the 86th minute when another substitute, Juan Ramón Fernández who had only been on the pitch for a matter of seconds, found the head of Ewerthon and the Brazilian made no mistake.

Hosts blink first
Dortmund looked the brighter side in extra time and created some good chances but failed to capitalise on them and the match moved inexorably to penalties. The hosts blinked first, with both Amoroso and André Bergdølmo missing from the spot.

Famous win
Meanwhile Timmy Simons, Nastja Ceh, Olivier De Cock and Mendoza all made no mistake to secure a famous win for Brugge, who will now take their place in tomorrow's Champions League group stage draw while Dortmund will have to be content with a berth in the UEFA Cup.
