Impressive in Europe
The 26-year-old midfield player impressed in the UEFA Champions League for the Serbo-Montenegrin title-holders, and Celta arranged a loan until the end of the season just prior to Monday's 20.00CET Primera División deadline, with an option for a five-year contract in June.
'Skilled technician'
New Celta coach Radomir Antic is an admirer of the player, and said: "He is a skilled technician and leader. Despite his midfield position he scores an average of 15 goals a season."
'I am very happy'
Ilic, who had been with the Belgrade side since childhood and has 19 international caps, said of the move: "I am very happy. Finally I am going abroad after 18 years with Partizan. Spain is a real football country and Celta are an excellent team. I am expecting good results. I am not worried that I am leaving on loan. In June everything will be finalised."
Out of Champions League
Ilic's Champions League appearances for Partizan make him ineligible for the rest of Celta's campaign in that competition, including their first knockout round tie against Arsenal FC. However, he will have a crucial role in the Galician club's attempt to avoid relegation from the Primera División. They are currently one point above the bottom three.
