Madrid were forced to address the issue of the 28-year-old's contract by his superb recent performances against Club Atlético de Madrid and RCD Mallorca. Solari would have become a free agent in June, and was rumoured to be a target for a number of Europe's top teams.
Track record
Solari arrived in Europe in 1999, joining Atlético after a four-year spell with CA River Plate in his homeland. He then went north of the Manzanares river to sign for Atlético's city rivals, where he has made over 150 appearances. Solari played in the 2002 UEFA Champions League final win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and has also helped Madrid to two Primera División titles.
