The UEFA Champions League group stage has moved into sharper focus with the completion of the second qualifying round.
Twelve teams secured safe passage through to the third qualifying round on Tuesday but there were still five more slots to be filled on Wednesday evening. Sweden's Helsingborgs IF took the first of those, beating The New Saints FC 3-0 on the night to triumph on aggregate by the same scoreline.
Helsingborg will now face WKS Śląsk Wroclaw – competing in the European Champion Clubs' Cup for only the second time – after they clung on to claim a 2-1 overall victory against FK Budućnost Podgorica despite a 1-0 second-leg defeat.
There was no doubting the most dramatic denouement of the night, GNK Dinamo Zagreb leaving it until the 98th minute to salvage a 3-2 home win against competition debutants PFC Ludogorets Razgrad and progress 4-3 on aggregate. Dinamo will play FC Sheriff.
Debreceni VSC lie in wait for FC BATE Borisov, meanwhile, after the Belarusian title holders drew 0-0 with FK Vardar following a 3-2 triumph last week. A goalless stalemate was also enough for AEL Limassol FC – 3-0 victors against Linfield FC last time out – to rubber-stamp a meeting with FK Partizan.
Third qualifying round draw
Ties will take place on 31 July/1 August and 7/8 August.
