Carroll sings Olympiacos praises in Montpellier

Defender François Modesto told UEFA.com that European experience had helped Olympiacos FC clinch a dramatic late win at Montpellier Hérault SC in Group B. Modesto said that Montpellier opening the scoring had sparked the visitors into life at La Mosson, while goalkeeper Roy Carroll hoped the victory would give Leonardo Jardim's men the confidence to push for a place in the knockout stage. The hosts' Younes Belhanda conceded that the French champions had only themselves to blame for the 2-1 defeat while Gaëtan Charbonnier was left with bittersweet memories of his first UEFA Champions League goal.

It's frustrating. We had the match in hand and lost it in ten minutes. We had to at least not lose the game. Personally, I'm happy, but collectively, I'm not satisfied because we lost, and we're not making any progress. It's becoming a bit tired – the same old story all the time. We're going to have to keep on working. We played well for an hour, and lost everything in ten minutes. We're going to do all we can to win the last three games. We always go out to win, and don't lose on purpose.

It's not the worst possible scenario, because we've been doing the same thing since the start of the season. We're down – it's up to us to do better. We can only do better. We haven't been ourselves since the start of the season. It's spoiling what we did last season. Even if we played well, it's the result that sticks in the memory. You could say that we've played well for a half against Arsenal, Schalke and Olympiacos. In the end, we've lost 2-1. We weren't disciplined enough defensively – not just the defence, the whole team. We let the match slip away from us and gave them their goals. We can only be annoyed at ourselves. We'll pick ourselves up. We're competitors. When you're on the floor, you have to pick yourself up.

We struggled in the first half. They had a lot of the ball, but we defended well, and kept our shape. And we also made the difference with our European experience as Olympiacos are in the Champions League every year. Montpellier dominated without posing any real threat, and didn't have a clear-cut chance to kill the game off. They managed to score, and the goal lifted a weight from us. We started to play, and we had more chances in the second half.

We knew that they're good in midfield and up front, they link up well and Belhanda and Cabella are above average technically. We tried to stay compact, put away our chances, and that's what we did. Mathematically, as long as we have a chance in the group, we're going to go for it, but we have to be careful for the game at home with Montpellier. They play well on the counterattack, and we have to focus on that game because it's going to be more difficult than this evening.

We defended a lot in the first half, and we started really slowly in the second half in that first five or ten minutes. They deserved the goal for their first-half performance, but when they got the goal, that's when we started playing. We started to believe in ourselves – that's what you have to do in these games – and we came back and it was nice to get the three points.

We got a goal from a set-piece, which is something we've been working on in training all week. That gave us more belief, and when we scored the second, it was very hard for them to come back and equalise.

We've got a lot of new players too, new coaching staff, and we're all trying to work together to get results in the Champions League. It's all about learning. We've got a victory after two defeats, and hopefully we can push on now. After coming back to score twice in the second half, hopefully the boys will say to themselves that we can go somewhere in this Champions League, because our ambition remains to go through to the knockout stages.
