Celtic FC knew they had a mountain to climb after losing 3-0 at home to Juventus in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, and while Neil Lennon's side came nowhere near that summit – going down 2-0 in the return – Charlie Mulgrew and Giorgos Samaras said this season's success had whetted the appetite for further European adventures in 2013/14.
Charlie Mulgrew, Celtic defender
We're going to be disappointed but we've got to get over it quick. Juventus are a very good counterattacking team, very solid at the back. They are a very good side and I wish them the best for the rest of the competition. We're a young squad – everybody's improved this year playing against the best teams and we can all benefit from this experience, so I suppose that's what we can take from it.
We're all a bit disappointed but we've got to get over it. Of course it's given us an appetite for it and we want to be involved next year. It's going to be hard to qualify – we've got to concentrate on winning the league first and hopefully doing well in Scottish Cup. It's given us a taste for it and hopefully we can be there again next year.
Giorgos Samaras, Celtic forward
We are a young team with a lot of talent and this experience will certainly be very useful for us in the future. Juventus are a great team, it was hard to play against them. We tried to play attacking football from the start and press them high up and we did manage to create some chances but unfortunately we didn't score. However, I think we need to focus on the positives – honestly I didn't see any negatives in the game tonight. We have to keep an eye on the positive things and try to keep learning. It's been a great journey for everyone at the club – the supporters and the players. It was a great experience and hopefully we'll be back next year.
