Málaga CF will attempt to continue their remarkable debut UEFA Champions League campaign into the semi-finals, though formidable opponents in the shape of Borussia Dortmund stand in their way.
• It is the sides' first meeting and the first time the Spanish hosts have encountered German opposition in Europe.
Match background
• The 2-0 victory over FC Porto at La Rosaleda in the round of 16 second leg gave Málaga a 2-1 aggregate win and extended their number of clean sheets in European home games to nine in 12 outings.
• This season Manuel Pellegrini's team defeated FC Zenit St Petersburg (3-0) and AC Milan (1-0) at home in the group stage before a 2-2 matchday six draw with RSC Anderlecht. They finished first in Group C, four points clear of seven-time champions Milan. Starting with Panathinaikos FC in the play-offs, they had won four games and drawn four in the UEFA Champions League prior to losing the first leg at Porto.
• Should the Costa del Sol club reach the semi-finals they will match the debut-season achievement of Pellegrini's Villarreal CF, who lost to Arsenal FC in the 2005/06 last four.
• Dortmund have already visited Spain in this season's competition. On matchday four they drew 2-2 at Real Madrid CF, and were only denied victory by Mesut Özil's 89th-minute strike. Nevertheless, the result helped them finish three points ahead of the nine-time European champions in Group D.
• Jürgen Klopp's men also drew 1-1 away to Manchester City FC and won 4-1 at AFC Ajax in the group stage.
• Dortmund's record in Spain is W1 D3 L5, including a 2-0 loss at FC Barcelona in the first leg of the 1997 UEFA Super Cup. The sole success was a 1-0 victory at Club Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 1996/97 – the season they won the trophy.
• Dortmund beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 at home after a 2-2 away draw to qualify for the last eight for the first time since 1997/98 when, as defending champions, they lost in the semi-finals. They reached the quarter-finals or better three years running between 1996 and 1998.
Team ties
• Martín Demichelis played at FC Bayern München from 2003 until January 2011. He won both the Bundesliga and the German Cup four times and finished on the winning side in five of his nine games against Dortmund, also recording one draw.
• Roque Santa Cruz was at Bayern from 1999 to 2007. Alongside five league titles and four cup wins, he also won the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League. In 11 league games against Dortmund, the Paraguayan striker scored three goals, his team winning six matches and losing only one.
• Nuri Şahin left Dortmund for Real Madrid CF in summer 2011 but rejoined the German club on an 18-month loan in January. He scored one goal in ten appearances for the Merengues in 2011/12.
• Sebastian Kehl and Santa Cruz were on opposite sides as Germany beat Paraguay 1-0 after extra time in Jeju in the 2002 FIFA World Cup round of 16.
• Júlio Baptista was a late substitute in Brazil's 3-2 semi-final victory against Germany in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Nuremberg. Patrick Owomoyela was on the bench for Germany.
• Javier Saviola and Kehl appeared as second-half substitutes when Argentina beat Germany 1-0 in a friendly in Stuttgart on 17 April 2002.
• Saviola appeared in Argentina's 2-2 draw in another friendly against a Germany side which included Owomoyela in Dusseldorf on 9 February 2005.
• Sergio Sánchez's Spain and a Germany for whom Marcel Schmelzer came on as a replacement shared a 0-0 draw in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stage in Gothenburg.
• Robert Lewandowski, Łukasz Piszczek and Jakub Błaszczykowski were in the Poland side that suffered a 3-1 friendly defeat by Diego Lugano's Uruguay on 14 November 2012 in Gdansk.
• Lugano came up against Mats Hummels, Schmelzer and Mario Götze when Uruguay lost 2-1 to Germany in a Sinsheim friendly on 29 May 2011.
