Dortmund draw suits Málaga

"We leave the match with a pretty positive feeling," said inspirational Málaga CF keeper Willy after a 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund that also gives Martín Demichelis hope.

Whether or not this becomes Málaga CF's final home game in this remarkable UEFA Champions League debut season, the memory of Willy's heroic display in the 0-0 quarter-final first-leg draw with Borussia Dortmund will live on for a long time.

Not only did he repeatedly produce saves of the highest calibre, notably a pair of one-on-one blocks from Mario Götze, the Argentinian proved the rallying point for a beleaguered home side. He now believes they can score in Germany on Tuesday, although Martín Demichelis is daunted by the fact Málaga will be unable to call on the suspended Manuel Iturra and Weligton.

Despite not scoring, despite not winning, we leave the match with a pretty positive feeling. We have to accept that Dortmund had really clear-cut chances and didn't take them so the fact is that this could have been a completely different scoreline. We had a few sniffs of goal too but the ball wouldn't go in for us.

Dortmund are a physically very strong team and when it's a man-to-man challenge they can draw an advantage from that. They play this type of game in their league and it's a given when you play a German team that you'll have extra work physically. Now it is time to recuperate and prepare for the second leg. Let's see what happens there.

Our defence worked really well and really hard tonight. We knew full well that we had a few players one booking away from a suspension, yet Dortmund had two first-team regulars out in this match and performed like this. It's all part of the Champions League experience. What's vital, just as it has been throughout this campaign, is that whoever deputises is ready to give everything.

We'll play the next game like we have all our away matches – since qualifying we've scored away from home every time apart from in Portugal [at FC Porto]. They are top-class opponents, they'll put our goal under pressure in Dortmund, but we'll go there to achieve a result to send us to the semi-final. That's the only way we know.

Martín Demichelis, Málaga defender
Among the positives from this performance is that we didn't concede. OK, it'll be difficult in Dortmund, a stadium where you always come under a great deal of pressure. But my view, from experience, is that while we'll show them respect we won't go to Germany suffering any kind of fear about what might happen. The tie is still totally open.

It's also only 11 v 11 and there are thousands of examples in this competition to say we can go to Dortmund and score. We did so in the San Siro, we did so in Russia and I see no reason why we shouldn't do so again in Germany. They are a dangerous, high-quality side but our squad is full of real men. We'll take the battle to them over there.

Over here they might have had the more dangerous chances but we had our moments and only lacked that clinical, finishing touch. We managed to find time to be comfortable on the ball as the match progressed and we made life complicated for them. The tie will be decided by who makes the fewer mistakes next time.

What we go away with is the knowledge that it's a pleasure to play in this competition. The Champions League is the greatest club competition in the world. To be in the last eight is, therefore, a huge pleasure. We'll show intensity and belief – and have a go at making the last four. We'll give it everything.
