"I'm delighted with the win and of course my two goals," Fernando Torres told UEFA.com after inspiring Chelsea FC's 3-0 success at FC Schalke 04, a result that ensured the London club joined their hosts on six UEFA Champions League Group E points.
The Spain striker admitted the margin of victory was probably unfair on Schalke but felt Chelsea's "individual class" made the difference in the end. Schalke's Julian Draxler agreed that the "cleverer team won" but still found several positives to take from the game.
Fernando Torres, Chelsea FC forward
I'm delighted with the win and of course my two goals. The three points were important after our opening defeat by Basel. We're first in the group now and still have two home games to come, so you could say we're well on track.
The result doesn't really reflect the flow of the game. It was a lot more even than the scoreline suggests and Schalke had a lot of possession in the first half. They just failed to score. In the end I think it was our individual class that made the difference.
We'll have to wait and see what today's result means in the grand scheme of things. All teams in the group are still in with a chance, which is both good and bad for us. It's nice to have beaten arguably our strongest rivals, though,
Eden Hazard, Chelsea forward
I think we put in a very good defensive display, especially when Schalke went for it towards the end of the first half. They played some good football, but we held firm and we're very pleased with the result.
I don't think Schalke are lacking too many qualities. It's the small things that can decide matches and we took our chances. They had more of the ball but we made sure that when we had it, we scored.
We're delighted to be top of the group, but we still have three games to play and we want to win them all. Of course we're happy to be up there at the moment, though.
André Schürrle, Chelsea forward
It was definitely hard work. Schalke had a lot of possession, which is not how we planned it. We wanted to dominate but we found ourselves pinned back and we had to wait for our chance to counter to turn the game. We did that very well and scored two goals on the counterattack in the second half. Based on the chances we created, I think we deserved the win.
We aim to dictate games, so hopefully it'll be a bit different when they come to our place. The same result would be nice, but a different game.
We've got three tough games to go and we need to collect points from each of them. We're determined to finish first in the group and we'll be doing everything we can to achieve that.
Julian Draxler, Schalke midfielder
I think the cleverer team won tonight. That's no disservice to us – we matched them at times but in the end we were helpless to stop them. They had three chances and scored three goals. Perhaps we were a little naive. You can't afford to make individual errors against a team like Chelsea.
We're still up there and everything is still in our hands, which is good. We'll have to see how we do at Chelsea. We've learned from tonight and we know we need to do better. Then we have the two other games [against FC Steaua Bucureşti and FC Basel 1893] and I'm confident we'll go through.
Benedikt Höwedes, Schalke defender
Of course we're disappointed to have lost 3-0 at home. The result was unequivocal but I think the game itself went somewhat differently. We did well in the first half. We conceded a silly goal from a set piece, but we created enough opportunities and I think we would have deserved an equaliser. Perhaps we were lacking a bit of luck or maybe even that final bit of determination.
The second half was a lot more difficult because Chelsea set up shop with ten men around their own box and just waited to counter. We made some individual errors in our build-up play and they punished us brutally. We can't change the result now, but I think we came off lightly when you consider Basel drew in Bucharest, so we're still on course.
Chelsea are a clever side. I think their experience paid off. Now we need to go to London and try to take something from the game as it'll be the two of us battling for top spot.
Timo Hildebrand, Schalke goalkeeper
I think we had one or two good chances, but we're talking about Chelsea here. They defended really well and it's very tough to break them down. That's their style – we've know that for years. We need to analyse this defeat now, learn from it and try to do better next time.
If Roman Neustädter's header had gone in it would have been a different game at 1-1, but they hit us with two counterattacking goals in the second half. I think they had a three-on-one, which is obviously something that can't be allowed to happen.
