SSC Napoli will be without midfielder Giandomenico Mesto for the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stage after the 31-year-old damaged ligaments in his right knee during the 2-1 weekend league win against Calcio Catania.
Mesto, replaced after only seven minutes by Bruno Uvini on Saturday, underwent tests this morning and his worst fears were confirmed. "He damaged the anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee and will undergo surgery this afternoon," read a Napoli statement.
Mesto, who has played eight games in Serie A this term, mostly as a full-back in place of the injured Camilo Zúñiga, could be sidelined for six months. Napoli have six points from three Group F matches and host Olympique de Marseille on Wednesday.
