Relaxed Mourinho insists pressure is on Basel

"The pressure is on Basel," said Chelsea FC manager José Mourinho ahead of facing Murat Yakin's Swiss champions, whose Group E hopes are in the balance.

FC Basel 1893 must beat Chelsea FC to stand any chance of progressing beyond the UEFA Champions League group stage – a situation that visiting manager José Mourinho think will work in his side's favour. "Their situation is difficult," said Mourinho, whose Basel counterpart, Murat Yakin, is keen for his side to deliver a victory in front of their home supporters and set up a last-day showdown with FC Schalke 04.

• A draw away to Basel will suffice to book Chelsea's place in the knockout phase, and a fourth straight victory will secure their qualification as group winners. Basel would go second if they won and FC Schalke failed to beat FC Steaua Bucureşti; conversely, they would be eliminated if they lost and Schalke won.

Basel
Murat Yakin, coach
We are prepared for the match and are looking forward to it. We want to play in the Champions League after the winter break and we also want to get our first [Group E] win at home.

A draw will be enough for Chelsea, but big clubs usually want to finish first in the group so as to have a better position in the draw. We want to do everything possible to set up a final against Schalke, but, first of all, we want to give our fans a good match and win our first game at home.

We were surprised by their lineup for the first match [Basel's 2-1 win in London on 18 September], but we have to concentrate on our own performance and we look forward to facing any player José Mourinho selects.

In our first game against Chelsea we showed that we had prepared well. They surprised us a little with their lineup. The player at the press conference didn't play. It was interesting to see, but I landed my first win against Mourinho. Tomorrow it is important that we start as one team and we win as one team and we show this to our fans.

Weekend result
Saturday: Basel 4-1 FC Thun (Stocker 21, Voser 51, Streller 75, Andrist 90+3; Sulmoni 13)
Vailati; Voser, Schär, Ajeti, Xhaka; Serey Die; Sio (Salah 67), Elneny, Frei, Stocker (D Degen 78); Streller (Andrist 84).

• Fabian Frei is the only ever-present for Basel in the league and UEFA Champions League this term after Yann Sommer missed Saturday's win. In the goalkeeper's absence, Germano Vailati, who joined in June 2012, made his top-flight debut for the club.

Team news
Marcelo Díaz is likely to miss the rest of the group stage with a broken rib. He is thought to have suffered the problem in Chile's 2-0 win against England, aggravating it during the 2-1 defeat by Brazil four days later. Behrang Safari has not featured since he sustained a thigh injury on matchday three.

Serey Die stopped training early on Monday as "a precaution" according to Yakin, who added: "He got hit on the foot in the last match and we didn't want to risk anything, but tomorrow he will be able to play."

Chelsea
José Mourinho, manager
I think Basel are a good team; in London they have played better than we did. But because they didn't win against Steaua Bucharest, their situation is difficult. Ours is better and hopefully on the last matchday we are already comfortable.

This is a period where I think the coach can play a role, not just the team. It is a period where only the brave survive, because it is hard, a period with a lot of matches. I enjoy it. We have nine matches to play in December and if we can win here, the match against Steaua has less importance. That is our motivation for tomorrow.

The pressure is on Basel, not us; we can qualify tomorrow and Basel, even if they win, still have to play a final match in Gelsenkirchen. So for them the situation is difficult, which shows clearly that after the first match we did our job and they didn't. But they are a very good team. It is going to be a big match for them.

Weekend result
Saturday: West Ham United FC 0-3 Chelsea (Lampard 21pen 82, Oscar 34)
Čech; Ivanović, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Ramires, Mikel, Lampard; Oscar (Schürrle 83), Hazard (Essien 84); Eto'o (Ba 79).

• Frank Lampard struck twice against his former side to end a run of ten league games without a goal – his worst spell in a decade.

Team news
Fernando Torres missed Saturday's win with an adductor problem while Ashley Cole was left on the bench after a recurrence of his rib injury.

Match fact
• Basel have lost four of their ten home fixtures against English opposition with three wins and three draws. Their only victory in their last four home games was a significant one – the 2-1 success over Manchester United FC on matchday six of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League enabling them to qualify for the knockout rounds at their opponents' expense.
