Porto duo insist progress still possible

On a cold night at the Estádio do Dragão, FC Porto were unable to claim the result they needed to put their UEFA Champions League fate back in their own hands. The draw with FK Austria Wien means they must beat Club Atlético de Madrid on matchday six and hope the outcome betters FC Zenit's result in Austria, but defender Maicon emphasised: "It is still possible." Visiting goalkeeper Heinz Lindner, who denied the hosts on several occasions, enjoyed a second excellent away point in a group where "nobody thought we'd get any".

What did we lack? In the first half we gave them a bit of an advantage because we were losing the ball much too easily. The consequence of that came with their goal. The second half was totally different. We attacked all the time, looking for goals.

It is difficult. We are not playing well, we did not start the game well and we cannot hide that. But Austria Wien surprised us – they came to play on the counterattack and to find space. In the first half it was us giving them the ball. I cannot remember a game where we lost the ball so much. The second half was the trademark of what FC Porto are about.

I was happy to play, but unfortunately we could not get the three points. We put in a lukewarm first-half performance, but in the second half we came back with a lot of effort. We did not get the result we wanted, sadly, but that is football. Mathematically, it is still possible.

Nobody thought we could play such good football here and we are very proud to take a point back to Vienna. In the first half it was not [the usual Porto], but in the second they put so much pressure on us, then scored the goal. I am proud that I am man of the match but the whole team played very well. It looks like we are a better team away from home. Nobody thought we would get a point in the whole group stage and now we have two, so we are very happy. We want to win [against Zenit] and to put in a good performance.

Of course it was a good result but we are a little bit disappointed. We were leading 1-0 and after half-time they got a quick goal. Of course it is difficult to play against a world-class team but I think we played a good game today. After the first ten minutes we felt they were a little uncomfortable and we pressed high to try and get the ball early.

After half-time they were better. For us, it is over, but we are happy to score a goal at least and have two points. We can play with freedom [against Zenit] and we do not have any pressure on us. The goal? It feels great but now I am a little tired, so maybe I will celebrate in couple of days!
