"It was agonising," Wayne Rooney told UEFA.com as he remembered Manchester United FC's penalties success against Chelsea FC in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final. "I was desperate to be on taking a penalty, but it wasn't to be. And it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in football – to watch and know that you've got no control over what's going to happen in the penalty shoot-out, it was horrible."
United won that shoot-out 6-5 – "a fantastic feeling," Rooney recalled – and are now hoping to take a step towards another final as they go into their quarter-final decider at holders FC Bayern München following a 1-1 Old Trafford draw. "Bayern and Barcelona are the best two teams in the competition," the 28-year-old forward said. "But we're ready, it's an exciting game for us all and for the fans – and it's a massive game to be involved in."
