United hope to continue English trend at Bayern

FC Bayern München will hope to put their recent struggles against English visitors behind them when they host Manchester United FC in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

• United have never won in Bavaria but David Moyes's visitors can take heart from a two-match winning streak on German soil, and the fact Bayern failed to beat two other Premier League sides in Munich this season.

• For United supporters the sight of Bayern will always bring back memories of that heady night in May 1999 when Sir Alex Ferguson's team snatched the European Cup out of the Bavarian club's grasp. However, this is a Bayern side with a coach, Josep Guardiola, who got the better of United in not one, but two UEFA Champions League finals with FC Barcelona.

• The holders had their seven-game run of away victories in Europe ended by the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford – the first time they had failed to win the first leg of a European tie since a 1-0 loss at FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16. On that occasion, they won the return 7-0.

Previous meetings
• Bayern came out on top when the sides met at this stage in 2009/10. In the first leg, Louis van Gaal's men came from behind to win 2-1 as Franck Ribéry (77) and Ivica Olić (90+2) overturned a first-minute goal by Wayne Rooney.

• United raced into a 3-0 lead in the second leg – Darron Gibson (4) and Nani (7, 41) scoring – but were edged out on away goals after Olić (43) and Arjen Robben (74) hit back for Bayern. The home side played the last 40 minutes with ten men after Rafael's red card.

• Bayern also prevailed in the clubs' 2000/01 quarter-final, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford on 3 April 2001 thanks to Paulo Sérgio's 86th-minute goal. They ran out 3-1 aggregate winners, with Giovane Elber (5) and Mehmet Scholl (39) striking in the second leg before Ryan Giggs (49) pulled a goal back.

• That was a measure of revenge for Bayern's 1999 final defeat at the Camp Nou when Mario Basler gave them a sixth-minute lead that they held until added time when United substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær so famously turned the game on its head.

• Giggs made one of eight appearances against Bayern in that final while Phil Neville, now assistant manager, was an unused substitute.

• Bayern are unbeaten in four previous home games against United, with a record of W2 D2 L0. The two drawn games came in the 1998/99 group stage (2-2) and the 2001/02 second group stage (1-1).

Match background
• Five-time winners Bayern are looking for a third successive UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance while United, European champions on three occasions, were last in the semi-finals in 2011. United's European Cup quarter-final record is 12 wins and five defeats while for Bayern it is 15 wins and nine defeats.

• For all the impressive statistics surrounding Bayern, they have failed to win any of their last four fixtures against English sides in Munich. This season, with progress from the group stage already secured, they lost 3-2 at home to Manchester City FC in December – a result that ended a competition record ten-game winning streak in the UEFA Champions League. Bayern then drew 1-1 with Arsenal FC in the round of 16 second leg having won the first encounter 2-0.

• Last season Bayern also failed to beat Arsenal at home in the round of 16, losing 2-0 though still advancing on away goals. In May 2012, meanwhile, they lost the UEFA Champions League final to Chelsea FC on penalties after drawing 1-1 in a match played on their own ground, but classed as a neutral venue.

• Bayern's last home success against Premier League visitors was a 2-0 victory against Manchester City in September 2011. Their overall record at home to English teams is W10 D6 L3.

• United's 5-0 victory at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday five was not only their biggest away success in Europe since 1965, but it was also their second in a row on German soil following a 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 in the 2010/11 semi-finals – Giggs and Rooney scoring. Their overall record away to Bundesliga opposition is W5 D4 L4.

• Bayern began the European season by beating Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup. They won 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Ribéry and Javi Martínez scoring.

• The Bavarian giants have fared less well against English clubs in European Cup finals. Although they beat Leeds United AFC 2-0 in the 1975 final, they have since suffered final defeat against Aston Villa FC (0-1, 1982), United (1-2, 1999) and Chelsea (1-1, 3-4 on pens, 2012).

• United have won five and lost six of the 11 UEFA competition ties in which they have drawn at home in the first leg. They have won three and lost two when the score has been 1-1 in the first game, most recently – and perhaps famously – in the 1999 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Juventus, when they won 3-2 away and went on to beat Bayern in the final.

• Bayern have won all but two of the 18 UEFA ties in which they drew away from home in the first leg, the exceptions being against Liverpool FC in the 1980/81 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals (0-0 away, 1-1 home) and AC Milan in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals (2-2 away, 0-2 home). They have drawn away 1-1 first time out on 11 occasions and won every tie.

Team ties
• Guardiola guided Barcelona to UEFA Champions League final triumphs against United in 2009 (2-0 in Rome) and 2011 (3-1 in London). He also lifted the trophy as a player at Wembley when Barcelona overcame UC Sampdoria in 1992.

• As a Barcelona player and coach, Guardiola did not lose in nine home encounters with English clubs.

• Prior to this season Moyes's only previous managerial experience of Bundesliga opposition had come in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage when he led his Everton FC side to a 2-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg.

• Thomas Müller struck twice in Germany's 4-1 win against Rooney's England in the 2010 FIFA World Cup round of 16. Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Jérôme Boateng and Bastian Schweinsteiger also featured for Germany.

• Boateng, Toni Kroos and Mario Götze played in Germany's 1-0 win over England at Wembley last November when Rooney, Chris Smalling and Tom Cleverley were on the losing side.

• Shinji Kagawa hit the third-minute opening goal in Dortmund's 5-2 defeat of Bayern in the 2012 German Cup final.

• Xherdan Shaqiri played for the FC Basel 1893 side who eliminated United from the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage with a 2-1 home triumph in December 2011.

• As a Chelsea player, Robben won three and drew one of four appearances against United, including a 1-0 FA Cup final win on his last outing for the club in 2007.

• As a Manchester City player in 2010/11, Boateng played in a goalless home derby draw with United.

• During a loan spell at City, Daniel Van Buyten played in two derbies against United in 2003/04, losing 4-2 in an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford before helping City to a 4-1 home league win.
