Lisbon final has Atlético's Gabi dreaming

The opportunity to win the UEFA Champions League with your home-town team does not come around too often, and it is one that Club Atlético de Madrid's Gabi is eager to seize against Real Madrid CF on 24 May.

"It would be a very proud moment for me and I would love it," said the 30-year-old holding midfielder. "Just like any fan, it would be amazing to go up to the podium and jump up and down. It would be a moment to savour for the people who have believed in us and supported us through the bad times. The moment would be for them."

After leaving Atleti for Real Zaragoza in 2007, Gabi returned to the Spanish capital four years later, establishing himself as a regular fixture in Diego Simeone's combative side. "He's had an amazing effect and is the main architect behind the change in mentality," said Gabi of his Argentinian mentor, who has cultivated "a common way of thinking, a common ideal which is carried out by everyone".

It is not just those employed by the Liga leaders that deserve credit for the camaraderie in evidence. After their semi-final opener against Chelsea FC, José Mourinho hailed the Estadio Vicente Calderón faithful as "from another dimension". "They are one of the few sets of supporters that have the ability to drive their team on. We've enjoyed a historic season and they've played a big part in that," Gabi added.
