Back from suspension, Luis Suárez will make his first UEFA Champions League appearance in almost four years on Wednesday if he turns out for FC Barcelona. Their hosts are AFC Ajax, the club he was representing in December 2010 during his 11th and last game in the competition. He discusses his return to Amsterdam, playing with Lionel Messi and why he will not celebrate if he scores – however happy he feels.
On returning to Ajax …
I'm delighted to be back in Amsterdam – it's a special match for me. I'm always happy to play here. Ajax were the most important club of my career, I learned a lot here both personally and professionally. Thanks to Ajax my dream of playing in the Champions League with a top team has become reality.
Everybody knows the love I have, not just for the city but also for the club and the people. They have treated me well, they helped me and I'm sure that if I have a chance in the future I would return. I don't know any of the players here now, though I worked for a couple of weeks with the coach so those are good memories. I have very good memories of the city.
On bouncing back from Saturday's defeat …
It isn't nice to lose as part of such a big team but we will give everything now to change this. You always have to give your all for Barcelona, whether you are playing in the Champions League or not. We are here to win and qualify for the next round.
On lining up with Lionel Messi …
It's an honour to line up next to Messi – from my point of view Messi is the best player in the world and you cannot compare him to anyone. In fact, I enjoy playing with all these great players. I have been training with the team for a while now, even if I wasn't playing.
On his preferred position …
I'm a forward and like all forwards I want to score goals. People will remember my form in front of goal last year and then I was playing on the left, the right or as a No9, so I don't really care where I play.
On returning to the UEFA Champions League …
It's a great source of happiness to play in the Champions League; I want to enjoy it. If I score I won't celebrate, though, because I really respect Ajax. I will be delighted to score my first goal for Barcelona but I won't celebrate.
