UEFA.com's team of the week

UEFA.com picks out the stars of matchday four, including prolific FC Shakhtar Donetsk striker Luiz Adriano, NK Maribor's penalty hero and the return of Lionel Messi.

GK: Jasmin Handanovič (NK Maribor)
The goalkeeper was beaten six times at Stamford Bridge on matchday three but produced no fewer than nine saves in the return against Chelsea FC – none more crucial than the block from Eden Hazard's late penalty to earn his side a point.

RB: Darijo Srna (FC Shakhtar Donetsk)
The Shakhtar captain was a key figure in his team's first three goals against FC BATE Borisov, opening the scoring with a deflected effort, setting up Alex Teixeira for No2 and playing a central role in winning the penalty from which Luiz Adriano made it 3-0.

CB: Vasili Berezutski (PFC CSKA Moskva)
The centre-back was at his imposing best at the City of Manchester Stadium, making six clearances to hold Manchester City FC at bay and help the Russian champions to a crucial victory.

CB: Maicon (FC Porto)
Porto allowed Athletic Club no shots on target at San Mamés and Maicon was a key element in laying the foundation for a significant Group H success, his six clearances allied to covering almost 11,000m as the Portuguese outfit held firm.

LB: Jefferson (Sporting Clube de Portugal)
Sporting may have conceded six goals over their two matches against FC Schalke 04 but Jefferson – making only his second UEFA Champions League appearance – more than made up for that at the other end, his whipped free-kick laying on Naby Sarr's opener before the Brazilian found the net himself with a thunderous strike.

RM: Koke (Club Atlético de Madrid)
Having scored one and set up three goals against Malmö FF on matchday three, Koke was at it again in Sweden, his sublime flicked finish setting last season's runners-up en route to a win that went a long way towards securing progress to the knockout rounds again.

CM: Andrea Pirlo (Juventus)
The Juventus playmaker marked his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance with a trademark free-kick, propelling the Italian title holders on their way to an eventful, and important, victory against Olympiacos FC.

LM: Son Heung-Min (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)
The South Korea forward supplied two assured finishes as Leverkusen claimed a third straight Group C win at FC Zenit, curling in the opening goal in the 68th minute and and slotting in Stefan Kiessling's through ball five minutes later.

FW: Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)
The Argentinian international scored for the third successive UEFA Champions League game at AFC Ajax – nothing unusual there, but his second strike carried extra significance, taking him on to 71 UEFA Champions League goals and matching Raúl González's competition record.

FW: Luiz Adriano (FC Shakhtar Donetsk)
The scourge of FC BATE Borisov two weeks ago with five goals, the striker was at it again in Lviv, registering a second-half hat-trick to take his group stage tally to nine goals – equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's group phase record from last season, and becoming the first player to score hat-tricks in successive UEFA Champions League fixtures.

FW: Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)
Having marked his first UEFA Champions League outing of the season with a goal and an assist at Galatasaray AŞ two weeks ago, Reus supplied another fine goal in the German club's 4-1 home win against the same opponents as Dortmund reached the round of 16 with two games to spare.
