Dortmund v Juventus background

Borussia Dortmund need to improve on a losing home record against Juventus to extend their UEFA Champions League campaign into a third successive quarter-final.

• Beaten 2-1 in Turin on 24 February, Dortmund have lost each of their three previous home games against Juventus.

• Fans of the Bundesliga side will prefer to remember the clubs' 1996/97 UEFA Champions League final meeting when Dortmund beat Juventus to record their first and only European Cup triumph to date.

Previous meetings
• It was in Munich 18 years ago that Dortmund shocked Juventus in the UEFA Champions League final. Substitute Lars Ricken – now Dortmund's youth co-ordinator – scored the third goal in their 3-1 triumph after Alessandro Del Piero had replied to Karl-Heinz Riedle's first-half double. Michael Zorc, today Dortmund's sport director, was a late substitute.

• The final lineups on 28 May 1997 were:
Dortmund: Klos, Kohler, Kree, Sammer, Reuter, Lambert, Möller (Zorc 89), Sousa, Heinrich, Chapuisat (Ricken 70), Riedle (Herrlich 67).

• Ricken and Zorc each scored when Dortmund won 2-1 at Juventus in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage, yet the Bianconeri won the reverse fixture 3-1 in Germany.

• Juventus also won in Dortmund when crushing BVB 6-1 on aggregate in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup final (3-1 a, 3-0 h). They did the same (4-3 agg) when the teams reconvened in the semi-final of the same competition in 1994/95 (2-2 h, 2-1 a).

• After advancing as Group A runners-up behind Club Atlético de Madrid, Massimiliano Allegri's Juventus are looking to reach only their second UEFA Champions League quarter-final since 2006. Their most recent appearance at this stage came in 2012/13 when they defeated Celtic FC (5-0 agg).

• Juventus had gone six away matches in the UEFA Champions League without a win – losing five of them – prior to their 2-0 success at Malmö FF on matchday five.

• The two-time winners last visited Germany for a 2-0 defeat at FC Bayern München in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

• Juve's overall away record against Bundesliga clubs is W8 D5 L8. Gianluigi Buffon kept a clean sheet when they last won in Germany, 1-0 at Bayern in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League group stage.
