Five of Wenger's greatest European nights

First match: Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Arsenal
12/10/1996, Premier League

Johan Cruyff and Terry Venables were mooted as Bruce Rioch's replacement when he left Highbury in August 1996. The London Evening Standard famously greeted the 46-year-old Wenger's arrival with the headline: 'Arsène Who?'. Victory at Ewood Park, with a pair of Ian Wright goals, began to answer that question.

Arsenal 4-0 Everton

"At first, I thought 'what does this Frenchman know about football?'" remembered Arsenal captain Tony Adams. All doubts were dispelled as this win made Wenger the first non-British manager to lift the English title, and his side clinched a domestic double with an FA Cup final defeat of Newcastle 13 days later.

The Gunners beat Nantes, Deportivo, Werder Bremen and LOSC to reach the final only to come up short in Copenhagen, despite Galatasaray losing Gheorghe Hagi to a red card in golden-goal extra time. "Sometimes you defend better with ten men because everybody is focused," Wenger said.

Internazionale Milano 1-5 Arsenal
25/11/03, UEFA Champions League group stage

Thierry Henry was established as one of Europe's deadliest forwards by the time of this trip to San Siro. His hat-trick helped Arsenal to a UEFA Champions League group success that "sent shockwaves around Europe", according to the BBC. "Not in my wildest dreams could we have predicted that result," said Wenger.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester City
15/05/04, Premier League

Mocked for suggesting Arsenal could go through a campaign unbeaten, Wenger emulated the Preston North End 'Invincibles' of 1888/89 with this win, finishing the Premier League campaign without defeat in the midst of an English-record 49-game unbeaten run. "It is something amazing, something special," he said.

Arsenal 1-2 Barcelona
17/05/06, UEFA Champions League final

The Gunners kept ten successive clean sheets – not conceding in a competition-record 995 minutes – en route to their first UEFA Champions League final, but goalkeeper Jens Lehmann's early dismissal in Paris proved pivotal, though Sol Campbell headed the Gunners in front.

After 93 years at Highbury, Wenger took the side to their new home for their first competitive match at the Arsenal Stadium, which the manager had helped to design. "It's a great achievement," Wenger said of the move. "It's a fantastic stadium and it needs a fantastic team."

Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa (30/05/15)
Having beaten Hull City after extra time the previous year, Wenger successfully defended the FA Cup for the second time in his tenure, and equalled George Ramsey's 95-year-old record of six FA Cup triumphs as a manager. "I have played in seven finals and we have won six, so I am very proud of that," he said.
