Borussia Dortmund defender Sven Bender has undergone successful surgery after breaking his jaw in two places during Wednesday's 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat at Arsenal FC.

The 22-year-old collided with Gunners defender Thomas Vermaelen, fracturing his jaw on both sides, and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp said: "It will be a while before he will return to team training, but he will be able to start running soon."

The Bundesliga title holders have not said when they expect to have the German international available again, but have stated that he is unlikely to play before January – citing the example of team-mate Mats Hummels who was ruled out for six weeks with a similar injury in February 2010.

Attacking midfielder Mario Götze was also taken off in the first half at Arsenal Stadium, having received a knock above his right knee, but while there is no damage to the joint itself he may be sidelined for Saturday's derby at home to FC Schalke 04.

Dortmund are bottom of Group G yet have a slim chance of progressing to the round of 16 on matchday six when they take on Olympique de Marseille at home, needing a win by a four-goal margin to finish above the French side. Should such a result coincide with an Arsenal victory at Olympiacos, the German champions would claim second place.
