Villarreal fortress awaits upbeat OB

A goal down from the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off against Odense BK, Villarreal CF are banking on their mighty home form as they bid for a third stab at the group stage, with midfielder Bruno Soriano vaunting his side's "scoring potential".

Hans Henrik Andreasen's opportunistic strike six minutes from time at the Odense Stadion last Wednesday has given last season's Danish league runners-up the edge, but Spanish international Bruno Soriano is certain Juan Carlos Garrido's men will be up for the rematch. "There is so much at stake here that each one of us will give 100%," the 27-year-old explained.

"Our dressing room is very solid and we know that if we work hard during the game we will have plenty of chances to score," he added. "Even though we didn't find the net in Denmark, we have total faith in our attackers who are capable of scoring a lot of goals; we have a lot of scoring potential. We mustn't be overconfident, but I think in our own stadium things will be very different."

Defender Ángel López is yet to recover from a cruciate ligament problem, but the Yellow Submarine have good reason for optimism; they beat OB 2-0 in their only previous meeting at El Madrigal back in 2004, and are on a run of eight straight home wins in Europe. "We are normally a lot better at home," said Bruno Soriano. "Our fans will be crucial; we noticed that last season. If the stadium is full on Tuesday night it will be fantastic for us."

Villarreal's statistics will make discouraging reading for OB fans, but coach Henrik Clausen remains buoyant following a 3-1 league win against Lyngby BK at the weekend, in which his side scored three times inside the first 30 minutes. "That game was a perfect last test," he said. "We got some fresh confidence in the tank, and I got to see some more of my substitutes in action – and they performed well too. It could not have gone any better."

OB are still hoping to bring back forward Peter Utaka, who picked up an ankle injury against Aalborg BK on 13 August, but if he fails to come through, Morten Skoubo is eager to lead the line, with the Danish international back in his home country after leaving Dutch side Roda JC. The 31-year-old played his first competitive game for OB against Lyngby, and said: "I obviously have to get used to playing for OB, who play a different way than I am used to. The most important thing for me is to help the team, and the goals will come in due course."
