Chelsea seek to scale Old Trafford fortress

Old Trafford is the setting for the conclusion of the all-English UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Manchester United FC and Chelsea FC.

• United are unbeaten at home in all competitions this season but Chelsea will not feel daunted by visiting a venue where they won on their last trip 12 months ago. They will need to repeat that feat having gone down to Wayne Rooney's 24th-minute goal in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

• The clubs previously met in Europe in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final when United prevailed on penalties to claim their third continental crown after a 1-1 draw at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. It was a night when Blues captain John Terry spurned the chance to win the trophy for the first time for Chelsea, sending his spot kick against the post.

• The head-to-head record between the clubs in all competitions is 68 wins for United, 44 for Chelsea and 47 draws.

• Their 2008 UEFA Champions League final meeting is classed as a draw. After Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard swapped first-half goals, Avram Grant's Chelsea ended with ten men following Didier Drogba's 116th-minute sending-off and United prevailed 6-5 in the shoot-out.

Ronaldo and Chelsea's Terry and Nicolas Anelka failed with their kicks, Edwin van der Sar's save from the latter securing United's triumph.

• The teams had met twice this season already before the first leg. United won 3-1 in the FA Community Shield at Wembley on 8 August, Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernández and Dimitar Berbatov scoring. Kalou replied for Chelsea.

• Chelsea came from behind to beat United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on 1 March. Rooney put the visitors ahead but David Luiz's first Chelsea goal and Lampard's penalty turned the tables before United lost Nemanja Vidić to a 90th-minute red card.

• Chelsea won the clubs' last Old Trafford encounter 2-1 on 3 April last year. Joe Cole and Drogba put the visitors two up before a late reply by United's Federico Macheda. • Of 11 meetings in Manchester since 2001, United have won five and Chelsea four with two draws.

• The first encounter between the clubs was an English second division fixture at United's former Bank Street home on Christmas Day 1905, which finished goalless. United were 4-2 victors in the first fixture between the sides at Old Trafford on 26 December 1912 – 24 hours after a 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Team ties
• Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has faced United three times in the UEFA Champions League. His Juventus team lost 4-3 on aggregate in the 1998/99 semi-finals but with Milan he recorded a 2-0 overall success in the last 16 in 2004/05, and a 5-3 aggregate semi-final victory in 2006/07. His record in those ties at Old Trafford was W1 D1 L1.

• Fernando Torres has scored in all three of his all-English UEFA Champions League ties, including two goals for Liverpool against his current employers. He struck against Arsenal and Chelsea in 2007/08 while his goal in Liverpool's 3-1 home first-leg loss to Chelsea in the 2008/09 quarter-finals was the last time he found the net in the competition.

• Paulo Ferreira helped FC Porto eliminate United in the round of 16 in 2003/04.
