Valencia CF captain Roberto Soldado was described as a "reference point" for the Liga club after extending his contract at Mestalla until 2017.
The Valencia president, Manuel Llorente, praised Soldado, scorer of 35 league goals in two seasons for the club, after the new deal was announced. "His performance has been fantastic, everyone has seen it," said Llorente, who also described the 27-year-old as "key figure" in the Valencia side for his "desire to make Valencia bigger and his winning mentality".
Soldado, a product of the Real Madrid CF youth ranks, joined Valencia, his home-town club, from Getafe CF in summer 2010. As well as hitting 17 Liga goals last term he added another five in the UEFA Champions League and was called up into Vicente del Bosque's preliminary Spain squad for UEFA EURO 2012, but missed the final cut.
