Four more through, four places remain

FC Bayern München, PFC CSKA Moskva, Real Madrid CF and AC Milan reached the UEFA Champions League first knockout round on Tuesday and the remaining four berths for the 18 December draw will be filled in the last set of group-stage fixtures this evening. uefa.com rounds up the outcomes of Groups A-D and assesses the possible permutations in Groups E-H; click on the group titles for full standings and fixtures.

Group A
Bayern needed to win at Juventus to pip their opponents to the last 16 and a 4-1 comeback victory ensured they did so in stunning style. Juve go into the UEFA Europa League round of 32, also drawn on 18 December while FC Girondins de Bordeaux, already confirmed as group winners, finished on 16 points with a 1-0 victory at bottom-placed Maccabi Haifa FC, that side's fifth straight loss by that scoreline. The Israeli champions become only the second team to finish a UEFA Champions League group stage without a goal and just the ninth to end point-less.

Group B
CSKA's 2-1 win at eliminated Beşiktaş JK took them through the group stage for the first time in five attempts as VfL Wolfsburg, second at kick-off, lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United FC, who therefore clinched first place. Wolfsburg go into the UEFA Europa League after the end of their debut campaign in the UEFA Champions League.

Group C
Three former European champions began Tuesday hoping to progress and Real Madrid and Milan made it through, with Olympique de Marseille transferring to the UEFA Europa League. Madrid finished top with a 3-1 win in Marseille; Milan were held 1-1 at FC Zürich, a result that would have cost them their place in the competition had OM picked up three points.

Group D
Chelsea FC had already clinched first place ahead of FC Porto before kick-off but the UEFA Europa League berth was still undecided. Club Atlético de Madrid took that despite losing 3-0 at home to Porto, finishing third in spite of APOEL FC's creditable 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Both ended on three points and had drawn both their games but Atlético edged APOEL on away goals in the head-to-head reckoning.

Group E
ACF Fiorentina and Olympique Lyonnais are both through ahead of Liverpool FC, who will go into the UEFA Europa League, and fourth-placed Debreceni VSC. Only top spot remains to be played for, with Fiorentina two points ahead as they visit Liverpool and Lyon welcome Debrecen. If Fiorentina draw, Lyon will probably need a two-goal win to overtake the Viola on overall goal difference as their head-to-head record is tied.

Group F
All four teams can still go through with FC Barcelona two points clear of FC Internazionale Milano and FC Rubin Kazan and FC Dynamo Kyiv, who welcome the holders to Ukraine, one further back. Barça can afford to lose by a two-goal scoreline other than 2-0 at Dynamo. The Ukrainian club must win 2-0 or by three goals to ensure progress, unless Inter and Rubin draw in which case any victory would be enough. Inter and Rubin both need a win to advance, though if Dynamo do not pick up maximum points a 0-0 or 1-1 draw would do for Inter, and any other draw would take Rubin through.

Group G
Sevilla FC are through and either debutants FC Unirea Urziceni or VfB Stuttgart will join them after their meeting in Germany. Two points adrift of second-placed Unirea, Stuttgart – under new coach Christian Gross – must win, with the team missing out on the last 16 going into the UEFA Europa League. Sevilla are two points ahead of Unirea and a draw at home to eliminated Rangers would confirm first place even if the Romanian side win in Germany.

Group H
Arsenal FC have won the group but second place is still to be decided. Olympiacos FC hold that position and a point at home to Arsenal would take them through; defeat for the Greek side and R. Standard de Liège would overtake them by beating visitors AZ Alkmaar. The Dutch side, under caretaker coach Martin Haar prior to Dick Advocaat's imminent arrival, cannot finish in the top two but would go into the UEFA Europa League with a win that would leave Standard in fourth.
