Serbian international defender Nemanja Vidić has signed an extension to his contract at Manchester United FC, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2012.

'Terrific impact'
The 26-year-old's existing deal was set to expire in 2010 but the club have moved quickly to offer him an extended contract after some excellent performances since his arrival in January 2006. "Nemanja has made a terrific impact at the club," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "He has forged a partnership with Rio Ferdinand that was a major part in us winning the title last year."

'A great privilege'
Vidić added: "Playing in this team is a great privilege. This is such a great club, I am delighted to be able to extend my stay here. The fans and everyone at the club have been very special to me. I hope I can do my bit to bring the club even more trophies in the years ahead." United reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-0 win against FC Dynamo Kyiv last night.
