Canny Koeman revels in victory

Ronald Koeman felt PSV Eindhoven's "unbelievable result" at Arsenal FC owed itself to a fine performance by Alex, who was also praised by Arsène Wenger.

Ronald Koeman hailed the 1-1 draw which sent his side through to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League as an "unbelievable result". A "disappointed" Arsenal FC manager Arsène Wenger was magnanimous in defeat, praising the match-winning contribution of PSV Eindhoven defender Alex.

Ronald Koeman, PSV coach
The result shows that by working hard and with the right attitude you can get results in Europe. In the knockout system anything can happen and we proved that tonight. This an unbelievable result and I'm very proud of the players. I was very pleased with the patience they showed but when Arsenal scored the first goal we expected them to put us under more pressure. Then we made it 1-1 and the match was virtually over. The 1-0 defeat in the first leg was a very difficult result for Arsenal to take into this game. Defensively we were very strong, Alex played very well. He's a fantastic defender and in the big games, the big players show what they can do.

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
It is a massive disappointment for us. It was a cruel night as we had the chances to score a second goal and couldn't take them. The amount of games we have played recently have caught up with us a bit, we were less physically sharp and we lacked a bit of sharpness and quality in the final third. We missed players like Robin van Persie and Tomáš Rosický. Thierry Henry was not ready to start the game. I feel Alex won them the tie. He kept their defence tight and then scored from a set-piece. Overall, it was very disappointing night.
