Heinze handed United role

Manchester United FC have signed Argentinia defender Gabriel Heinze from Paris Saint-Germain FC for €10.4m.

Successful campaign
The 26-year-old, who holds a German passport, has been called into Argentina's squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after enjoying a successful season with the Parisian club.

Defensive reinforcement
He will increase United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's defensive options with centre-back Rio Ferdinand still serving an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test. Heinze is the club's second close-season signing following the capture of striker Alan Smith from relegated Leeds United AFC.

Cup glory
Heinze played for Real Valladolid CF in Spain and Sporting Clube de Portugal before joining PSG three years ago. He went on to make 99 league appearances for the club and helped them win the Coupe de France last season.
