Ankle agony rules out Robben

Arjen Robben expects to miss both legs of Chelsea FC's quarter-final against FC Bayern München next month.

Chelsea FC winger Arjen Robben expects to miss both legs of his side's UEFA Champions League quarter-final against FC Bayern München after suffering an ankle ligament injury while on international duty with the Netherlands.

Foot injuries
Robben, only recently back in action for the English Premiership leaders after breaking his foot, stretched the ligaments in his left ankle 20 minutes into the 2-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory against Romania on Saturday. The 21-year-old will be out for at least two weeks, ruling him out of his country's home game against Armenia on Wednesday.

Matches missed
Robben faces a race against time to regain his fitness in time for the second leg of Chelsea's Champions League tie against Bayern on Tuesday 12 April, six days after the first match in London. "I certainly cannot play against Armenia and the Champions League matches against Bayern will also come too soon," said a disappointed Robben, who was replaced in the Dutch squad by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

'Another scan'
Chelsea doctor Bryan English was more optimistic, however. "I am grateful that the Dutch medical team is so co-operative," he said. "They have kept us fully informed. I'm talking to them twice a day. [Robben] is due another scan on Tuesday and, depending on how that comes out, will either stay in Holland or come back directly for treatment."
