Article body
AFC Ajax have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Internazionale FC for the transfer of winger Andy van der Meyde.
Talks under way
The 23-year-old Van der Meyde is now negotiating with the Italian side about the terms of his contract. Should he accept the Nerazzurri's offer, Van der Meyde will become the second Ajax player to move to Serie A this week after Cristian Chivu joined AS Roma for €18m - although the transfer has to be ratified by FIFA who have banned Roma from international deals.
Koeman realistic
Ajax have not disclosed the fee involved, though it is likely to be significant for a player who appeared in 13 UEFA Champions League matches last season, scoring once. The Amsterdam club's coach Ronald Koeman said of the potential move: "When this kind of teams wants one of your players, and the player has the ambition, then it is tough to prevent a transfer."
Key figure
Andy van der Meyde was a key figure in Ajax's double-winning team of 2001/02, his fine form over 30 appearances earning him a first call-up to the Netherlands national squad for a match against the United States. After marking his debut with a goal, Van der Meyde has failed to find the net in his subsequent three internationals. Inter have qualified for the Champions League group stage.
