PSV lay foundations; Simeone scents Atlético goals

I'm very satisfied with this result. I'd said before that, if you can keep a clean sheet at home, you lay a good foundation. We have something to fight for in Madrid now; it's all to play for. If we can get a goal over there, we have a chance to go through. We're going to give everything to do that.

In the first half, they had a couple of chances and we had one decent opening ourselves. We played a large chunk of the second half with ten men, against a top team, and the whole side did a great job then.

I thought Gastón Pereiro's second yellow card was harsh, but it's a lesson for us, and I'm very happy with the way my team coped with his dismissal.

[PSV goalkeeper Jeroen] Zoet played very well. He forced the attacker to make a choice [in a one-on-one with Antoine Griezmann]. He's important for the team. If everybody is at their best then we can play for a clean sheet. Normally we can get a goal too but not today. We will try to do that in the away match.

The boys played a brutal game. PSV were very difficult opponents. We controlled the second half and [goalkeeper Jan] Oblak didn't have to do anything. We couldn't score but we're not out of the tie. When we have given everything, have had chances and have played the game in the opposition half, it makes me happy. Goals will come – I'm a patient man.

They're tough opponents and, above all, they're quick, but we had clear-cut chances. I go home happy. I'm relaxed in the knowledge we have the second leg at home.

The players are not scoring but that is my responsibility. I will encourage my team to keep creating chances. If we continue doing that, we will score goals. As a team we defended well, against a team that can hurt us on the counterattack, so as a unit we did well.

In the first half we were the better side but we did not score. I am happy with the work the players put in. We really pressed the PSV defence, which created chances for us. The second half was very similar and we continued to carve out opportunities. If we play like that in the second leg, I am convinced we will score.

We are in a difficult situation because a draw could take them through. PSV have a great team and they have the advantage that an away goal counts double. We will have the crowd behind us, though. I have a good feeling about the return match.
