How do you rate Ricken's final lob?

As first touches go, they do not come more memorable than Lars Ricken's against Juventus in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder had been on the Olympiastadion pitch for a matter of seconds when he raced on to a pass from Andreas Möller and, with one swing of his right foot, deftly floated the ball over the stranded Angelo Peruzzi. The lob, which restored the Bundesliga side's two-goal lead after Alessandro Del Piero had halved the Bianconeri's arrears in the 65th minute, is a contender in UEFA's best goal poll.

The positioning of the Juventus goalkeeper had been something the then 20-year-old, who spent his entire career with the Schwarzgelben, had noted. "Seconds before the goal, I was still on the bench," he recalled. "I watched the first 70 minutes of the match from there and I noticed that Peruzzi was often standing too far from his goal. In fact, I came on with that in my mind, thinking: 'Peruzzi is too far from his goal, Peruzzi is too far from his goal.'

"And then Andreas Möller passed me the ball five seconds after I came on to the pitch, and that developed into a great chance. Even the TV reporters in their [commentary] boxes were shouting 'lob the ball', or something like that. So at that moment I was lucky. You score a goal like that from one in ten attempts.
