Club Atlético de Madrid captain Gabi has extended his contract with the Spanish champions by 12 months until the summer of 2017.
The 30-year-old midfielder, whose deal had been due to expire in 2016, said: "I was eager to sign this new contract – I want to continue making history here and helping my side."
Ahead of what will be his seventh season in the Rojiblancos first team, Gabi also insisted that repeating the feats of the past campaign – during which Atlético won their tenth Liga title and were runners-up in the UEFA Champions League – represents a difficult but achievable goal. "We realise that what we managed to do will be hard to beat but this team is capable of rising to the challenge."
Former Atlético youth-teamer Gabi is in his third spell with the Colchoneros having also played for Getafe CF and Real Zaragoza – he has scored six times in 160 league games for the capital outfit. Since returning to the Vicente Calderón in 2011, the 30-year-old has won the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Rey as well as captaining the side to their first Liga in 18 years.
