Lucky charms: Top European Cup winners

Iker Casillas has the chance to become the 11th man to have played on the winning side in three UEFA Champions League finals when Real Madrid CF take on Club Atlético de Madrid in Lisbon.

In the first XI in Madrid's 1999/2000 success, Casillas also came on for the injured César Sánchez as his team prevailed against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2001/02 decider. Should the Merengues claim the long-anticipated 'Décima', the 32-year-old goalkeeper would join a raft of former team-mates – Fernando Hierro, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Morientes and Raúl Gonzalez – on three UEFA Champions League triumphs.

The top performer in UEFA Champions League finals remains another Madrid old boy, Clarence Seedorf – victorious four times, and the only player to have lifted Europe's top club prize with three different teams: AFC Ajax, Madrid and AC Milan.

However, Seedorf's four successes still leave him well short of the all-time mark of six wins, claimed by Francisco Gento – the sole Madrid player to feature in each of their first six European Champion Clubs' Cup final victories. Milan's Paolo Maldini and Liverpool FC's Phil Neal are the only non-Madrid players on the all-time leaderboard.
