"I really left a big mark on that final," said Dejan Savićević as he recalled his pin-point lob in AC Milan 4-0 victory against FC Barcelona in the 1994 UEFA Champions League decider – one of the contenders in UEFA's best goal poll.

Milan's fifth European title was arguably their most emphatic as they swept aside the Spanish giants in Athens and it was Savićević's strike that put the result beyond doubt as the Rossoneri forged 3-0 ahead within two minutes of the second half commencing. Sergi Barjuán dallied too long on a bouncing ball and Savićević pounced, looked up and lobbed Andoni Zubizarreta from distance. The goal capped a stellar performance from Il Genio (The Genius), who might have had another only to be denied by an upright.

"That goal always brings back beautiful memories," said the midfielder. "Not only because I scored in such an important match, but because that was one of the best performances of my career. I really left a big mark on that final."

"It is one of the most beautiful goals of my career, perhaps even the most beautiful. Not only because the level of difficulty of the shot itself, but also because the importance of the game - the biggest one in European football.

"It was one of those situations when a player has to take the right decision. In a split second I decided to shoot because I saw that the goalkeeper was standing a few steps away from his goal line. I was lucky to hit the perfect shot."
