UEFA Champions League by numbers

UEFA.com looks back on the first week of the UEFA Champions League and ahead to matchday two with ten of the most interesting statistics.

• FC Viktoria Plzeň's game with Manchester City FC was the first UEFA Champions League match to be staged in Plzen. When the Czech club participated in the 2011/12 group stage, they played their three home fixtures at Prague's Stadion Eden.

• The Štruncovy Sady Stadión therefore becomes the 142nd venue to hold a UEFA Champions League game; the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, home of AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano, tops the list with 128 encounters.

• Lionel Messi's third goal in FC Barcelona's 4-0 win at home to AFC Ajax was goal No6,100 in the UEFA Champions League.

• Messi is now the player with most hat-tricks in the history of the UEFA Champions League having managed four – one more than Filippo Inzaghi (two for Juventus, one for Milan) and Mario Gomez (three for FC Bayern München). Last week's trebles for Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo take the total number of UEFA Champions League hat-tricks to 78.

• FK Austria Wien became the 128th club, from 31 countries, to participate in the group stage when they lost 1-0 to FC Porto in Vienna.

• FC København will play their 150th match in UEFA competition when they visit Real Madrid CF on Wednesday.

• Several teams could bring up goalscoring landmarks on matchday two: in the European Cup, Austria Wien (currently 95 goals) and Olympique de Marseille (147) are closing in on notable marks, while in UEFA club competition overall Celtic FC (449 goals), Borussia Dortmund (298) and Galatasaray AŞ (349) are also drawing near.

• At the other end of the pitch, unwanted European Cup milestones could be reached by Ajax (195 goals conceded) and Olympiacos FC (199) while in UEFA competition RSC Anderlecht (449 goals against), SL Benfica (395), Celtic again (296), Manchester United FC (296) and FC Steaua Bucureşti (346) will all look to postpone looming landmarks for as long as possible. In European Cup terms, Real Madrid (400 goals shipped) have already achieved an unwanted figure this season, with Club Atlético de Madrid (250 goals) and Viktoria Plzeň (50) doing likewise in UEFA competition.

• Celtic and Olympiacos's next defeats will be each club's 100th in UEFA competition.

• Josep Guardiola's influence is already being felt at Bayern: the holders completed 753 of their 862 attempted passes on matchday one, a success rate of 87%. All three stats are higher than for any other side. Furthermore, the three players who attempted the most passes in the opening games – David Alaba (108), Franck Ribéry (106) and Philipp Lahm (99) – all represent Bayern.
