UEFA has unveiled the new visual identity created specially for the UEFA 2014 Champions League final, which will take place at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon on Saturday 24 May 2014.
The 2014 final of the UEFA Champions League in Lisbon will be given a personality of its own with a complete design concept specially developed for the event. The design and logo will provide both the ‘Road to the Final’ and final with a unique identity that will be applied across a wide range of promotional applications, with the objective to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
The design concept is based on an amalgamation of style and energy derived from the Portuguese age of discovery. Portuguese explorers used the stars to guide them around the world in search of new lands, while on 24 May 2014 11 stars from each side will look to steer towards victory in Lisbon.
The 2014 final visual identity draws its inspiration from the armillary sphere used by the Portuguese navigators to measure the alignment of stars, and the wind rose compass, based on the Belem compass in Lisbon, composed of 32 points, each one defining a club's journey to glory and its literal representation of the 'Road to the Final'.
The initial idea that led to the creation of a new identity for each final was to develop a specific design with a distinctive flavour of the host city.
