Feyenoord too strong in Istanbul

Feyenoord made it through to the UEFA Champions League first group stage after a third qualifying round second-leg win away at Fenerbahçe SK of Turkey.

Home side start well
The Dutch UEFA Cup holders already led 1-0 going into the Istanbul return, but were put on the back foot in the first half as Fenerbahçe created several good chances but Haim Revivo and Ariel Ortega were unable to convert their opportunites. However, as the half wore on Feyenoord began to settle, and even dominated towards the end of the period with Bonaventure Kalou going close with a powerful long-range shot.

Ono opens scoring
It did not take the visitors long to open the scoring in the second half, as Paul Bosvelt found Shinji Ono on the left, and the Japanese international, who scored the only first-leg goal, finished coolly.

Buffel completes victory
Substitute Thomas Buffel then wrapped up the game for Feyenoord, his last-minute shot bouncing in off the left post to ensure a return to the Champions League group phase for the Dutch team, who went out in the same stage of last season's competition before playing in the UEFA Cup. Fenerbahçe will now enter the latter competition in the first round.
