Mark Falco scored three goals across the two legs as Keith Burkinshaw's Spurs eliminated Kurt Linder's Ajax in the first round of the 1981/82 European Cup Winners' Cup, the sides' only previous UEFA encounters. Tottenham reached the semi-finals that season, losing to Barcelona.
