Tottenham Hotspur will host the first European game in their new stadium on 9 April and visitors Manchester City will also be hoping for a new experience in the all-English UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
The tie will be the sixth at this stage of the competition between two Premier League clubs, and the second in a row for City, after going out to Liverpool at the same point 12 months ago. That meant that City had lost all four of their matches against English opposition in Europe, following home and away defeats by Chelsea in the 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup semis.
Tottenham won the first UEFA Cup in 1972 over two legs against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but eight seasons earlier had been eliminated by Manchester United in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round.
It was United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool who, as the Premier League's so-called 'big four' of the time, helped England dominate the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League between 2004 and 2011 and produce most of the Premier League 'derbies' in Europe. We chart the previous all-English ties in European competition, and how far the eventual winners went.
