Madrid further clear as the dominant European Cup city

Real Madrid's 12th European Cup victory has taken the Spanish capital even further clear of Milan as the most successful city in both the competition overall and the UEFA Champions League.

2017 final highlights: Real Madrid 4-1 Juventus

Real Madrid's 12th European Cup victory has moved the Spanish capital even further clear of Milan as the most successful city in the competition.

Up until last May, AC Milan and Internazionale Milano's combined ten titles and 16 final appearances had made the Italian city the European Cup's most prolific. However, Real Madrid's 11th win a year ago, allied to Atlético finishing as runners-up, took the Spanish city ahead of Milan in both respects. The Madrid neighbours were contesting the final for a second time in three seasons, the only one-city deciders in the competition's history.

The Merengues' newly won 12th title and 15th final appearance have extended the Madrid advantage. In the UEFA Champions League era alone, the Spanish capital can now celebrate its sixth victory, two more than Milan (whose seven finals, shared between Milan and Inter, the Spanish capital has also eclipsed) and Barcelona.

Madrid is also by far the most successful capital city in the European Cup, with Amsterdam next on four wins courtesy of Ajax, and Lisbon having had seven final appearances thanks to Benfica. Through the efforts of Arsenal and Chelsea, London can claim three UEFA Champions League finalists – and, like Amsterdam, one success.

As for performances in all three of UEFA's current and past major club competitions, Madrid also leads Milan 17-15 in trophies won and 27-23 in final appearances, though no city can equal London's feat of four different winners and five separate finalist clubs.
