Heynckes: 'I have never experienced this'

Even Jupp Heynckes, 68 and with three decades of coaching experience behind him, feels this has been an "extraordinary season" for FC Bayern München that could yet end in a treble.

Even at the age of 68, with more than three decades of coaching experience behind him, FC Bayern München's Jupp Heynckes is enjoying a season like never before.

Heynckes, in his third stint at Bayern, has already guided them to the Bundesliga title at a canter. The UEFA Champions League – a trophy Heynckes first won with Real Madrid CF in 1998 – could follow at the expense of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, while the German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart could complete a stunning treble. It would be a sensational way for Heynckes to leave his post, with Josep Guardiola already inked in to take over in the summer.

"I have never experienced this, and that's why this is an extraordinary season," he said. "We have broken almost all records. Normally when you score a lot of goals you also concede a lot, but ... players like Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, Mario Gomez, [Mario] Mandžukić, Thomas Müller, [Xherdan] Shaqiri, they have all learned to defend as well. That is essential in today's football.

"I think that football has changed, it has become more complex. For example, it's faster, you have less free space and you have to play from such small spaces. Also the players, and player generations have changed, so that means that communication with the players is different nowadays."
