FC Bayern München have become the joint third most successful club in European Cup history following their victory against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
The German team are now behind only Real Madrid CF – the most recent of whose nine triumphs came in 2002 – and AC Milan, who lifted the trophy for a seventh time in 2007, in the overall standings. Bayern are level with Liverpool FC, who claimed their fifth title with a memorable win against Milan two years earlier. Wembley marked the Munich outfit's tenth final, fewer than just Madrid (12) and Milan (11).
Bayern were previously level on four successes with FC Barcelona and AFC Ajax, one ahead of FC Internazionale Milano and Manchester United FC. Dortmund's defeat in north London means they missed the chance to join four sides on two victories: SL Benfica, Juventus, Nottingham Forest FC and FC Porto. Instead, Dortmund – UEFA Champions League winners in 1997 – remain one of ten clubs with a single title to their name.
