Vitesse defender Alexander Büttner has completed a move to Manchester United FC, signing a five-year contract after completing medical tests at Old Trafford. No details of a transfer fee have been released.

The 23-year-old – who was named in the Netherlands' provisional 36-man squad for UEFA EURO 2012 – said: "Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It's a team I have admired for many years now and I can't wait to join my team-mates and play my part in helping the club be successful."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson added: "Alexander is one of the best young left-backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him. He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

Büttner made over 100 league appearances for Arnhem-based Vitesse. United will enter the UEFA Champions League in the group stage after finishing second in England last season.
