Spanish champions
The 34-year-old has been the club's No1 since arriving from Real Madrid CF in 1998, establishing himself as one of Europe's finest custodians in the process. Cañizares conceded just 25 goals in 37 matches as Valencia won the Primera División last season, his second championship at the Mestalla.
Final losses
Cañizares then kept a clean sheet at Valencia defeated Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Cup final in Gothenburg, a victory which went some way towards easing the pain of successive UEFA Champions League final losses in 2000 and 2001. The Spanish champions drew 2-2 with Leeds United AFC yesterday in a friendly.
