Porto 3-1 Roma: Champions League at a glance

Porto reached their first UEFA Champions League quarter-final since 2015 courtesy of a 3-1 extra-time win against Roma, Alex Telles scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot late on.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the hosts struck first after 26 minutes, Francisco Soares turning in Moussa Marega's cross from close range. Roma regained the aggregate lead before half-time, though, when Daniele De Rossi converted a penalty.

Early in the second period Marega's expert finish at the back post from Jesús Corona's cross left the tie all-square, and neither side could land a decisive blow as normal time drew to a cagey conclusion. Marega and Edin Džeko then spurned extra-time chances, before Telles made no mistake with the second spot kick of the game.

This was one of those magical UEFA Champions League nights. There were emotions aplenty, fantastic goals and no shortage of late drama. On the front foot from the off, Porto were deserving winners. Even so, Džeko might have stolen it for Roma in extra time, before Alex Telles stepped up to send the home team into the last eight.

Roma had five defenders on the field, but even between them they were unable to keep Marega quiet. His movement across the line dragged Iván Marcano, Juan Jesus and Kostas Manolas right, left and centre – creating gaps for him to deliver an assist for the opening goal, and then exploit one himself to give Porto the lead for the second time on the night.

• Soares' opening goal was his first in the UEFA Champions League since 6 December 2017, and only his second in seven competition appearances.

• Porto have scored the first goal in all four of their UEFA Champions League home games this season.

• Marega has scored in six successive UEFA Champions League outings.

What does it mean?

Porto move into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2015, when they lost 7-4 on aggregate to Bayern. They will be confident of a better showing this time around, particularly given their stirring home form – Sérgio Conceição's men have won all four UEFA Champions League fixtures in northern Portugal this term. No side in the last-eight draw on 15 March (12:00CET) will relish a trip to the banks of the Douro.

What's next?

The games come thick and fast for Porto prior to the quarter-final first legs (09/04 or 10/04): Conceição's side visit Feirense on Sunday and host Marítimo before the international break. The Portuguese champions then have back-to-back trips to Braga in the Liga and Portuguese Cup semi-finals, before welcoming Boavista.

Roma face two important fixtures for their top-four hopes ahead of the international break, Eusebio Di Francesco's team entertaining Empoli and then travelling to SPAL.
