Barcelona v Lyon background

Barcelona and Lyon remain unbeaten in this season's UEFA Champions League as they meet again at the Camp Nou with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

• There were no goals in the first game at the OL Stadium on 19 February. The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was when Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen brilliantly tipped Martin Terrier's first-half shot against the crossbar.

• While the French side are in the round of 16 for the first time since 2011/12, Barcelona have featured every year bar the first since its 2003/04 introduction – 15 years in a row – and have won 12 of their previous 14 ties.

• First in Group B this season, Barcelona have lost only one of their last 18 UEFA Champions League matches and are unbeaten this season, as are Lyon; Les Gones finished second behind Manchester City in Group F and have now drawn six games in a row in the competition, one short of AEK Athens' record. This is the only round of 16 tie between two clubs who went unbeaten through the group stage.

Previous meetings
• The most recent of the sides' six meetings before the first leg came in the 2008/09 round of 16, when Barcelona won 6-3 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy. After a 1-1 draw in Lyon, the Spanish club were 5-2 victors at the Camp Nou, Lionel Messi scoring the third goal. Gerard Piqué also played in both games, with Sergio Busquets featuring at the Stade de Gerland.

• Those were the teams' only previous knockout fixtures before the first leg. They met in the 2001/02 first group stage and the 2007/08 group stage; Barcelona won each home game without conceding and earned a win and a draw in France, Messi scoring both home (3-0) and away (2-2) in the latter campaign.

• Barcelona have been in the round of 16 every year from 2004/05 onwards, winning 12 of those 14 ties. The Blaugrana lost two of their first three ties, most recently against Liverpool in 2006/07, but have won their last 11. In 2017/18 they beat Chelsea 4-1 on aggregate (1-1 away, 3-0 home).

• Barça's home record in the round of 16 is W12 D1 L1 – they have won the last 11 matches.

• Barcelona's last home game with French opponents was a spectacular one as they produced the biggest comeback in UEFA Champions League history to win their 2016/17 last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain. Barça looked to be heading out when they lost the first leg 4-0 in Paris, only for a stunning 6-1 second-leg success to turn the tie on its head.

• That was also Barcelona's third successive win at home to French clubs; their record against Ligue 1 sides at the Camp Nou is W8 D2 L1.

• Barça's record in two-legged sides against Ligue 1 opponents is W4 L3; after losing the first three contests they have won the last four.

• Barcelona won both home games in last season's knockout rounds, and are unbeaten in 11 knockout games at the Camp Nou (W9 D2), since a 3-0 loss to Bayern München in the 2012/13 semi-final second leg.

• Ernesto Valverde's side won their first two home games in this season's group stage, beating PSV Eindhoven 4-0 and Internazionale 2-0 before a 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

• That helped Barcelona finish first in their UEFA Champions League group for the 12th season in a row and the 20th overall – both competition records. They have reached at least the quarter-finals in all their last 11 UEFA Champions League campaigns, another competition record, losing in the last eight in the last three seasons; in 2017/18, they succumbed to a remarkable Roma fightback, going out despite a 4-1 home first-leg victory after losing 3-0 in Italy.

• That defeat at Roma is Barcelona's sole loss in their last 18 UEFA Champions League fixtures (W10 D7).

• Barcelona are unbeaten in 29 UEFA Champions League home matches, a run that started in September 2013 (W26 D3); the draw against Tottenham equalled the competition record of 29 set by Bayern München between March 1998 and April 2002.

• Spanish champions for the 25th time – and third in four years – in 2017/18, Barcelona have been European champions on five occasions, most recently in 2015.

• Barcelona have recorded 25 away first-leg draws in UEFA competition, winning 20 of those ties on aggregate, most recently against Chelsa in last season's round of 16 (1-1 away, 3-0 home). Their record is more mixed when the first game has finished 0-0 away, however, with four aggregate wins and two defeats; the most recent such contest came against AC Milan in the 2011/12 quarter-finals (3-1 home).

Lyon
• This is Lyon's tenth UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, and a first in seven seasons. They won the first three ties but have lost five of the last six, most recently being beaten on penalties by APOEL of Cyprus in 2011/12.

• Lyon's last victory in the round of 16 came at the expense of Barcelona's great rivals Real Madrid, who they beat 2-1 on aggregate in 2009/10 (1-0 home, 1-1 away).

• Lyon have lost four of their last five away games in the round of 16, where their away record overall is W3 D2 L4. Their last away win at this stage, 1-0 at PSV Eindhoven in 2005/06, was their third in a row.

• Lyon's record in two-legged knockout ties against Spanish clubs is W3 L3, most recently a 4-1 defeat of Villarreal in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League round of 32 (3-1 home, 1-0 away) – their last fixtures against Liga opposition.

• Les Gones won their first game in this season's UEFA Champions League, 2-1 at Manchester City, before drawing the next five. They qualified for the round of 16 with a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six.

• Coupled with the first leg, that makes it just one defeat in 11 European matches for Bruno Génésio's side, who had scored two or more goals in six continental fixtures in a row before drawing at Shakhtar.

• Les Gones have lost only one of their last eight European away fixtures (W4 D3) and none of their last five in the UEFA Champions League (W2 D3).

• Lyon were UEFA Champions League semi-finalists in 2010 and are in the competition for the 15th time – more than any other French club.

• OL have lost all eight UEFA competition ties in which they drew the initial leg at home, most recently against Real Madrid in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (1-1 home, 0-3 away). That includes two ties where the initial match finished goalless, most recently in the 2005/06 quarter-finals against AC Milan (1-3 away).

• Philippe Coutinho made his 50th appearance in UEFA club competition in the first leg with Lyon.

• Barcelona are 11 games unbeaten in all competitions (W7 D4); the first leg with Lyon was their fourth draw in five matches, but they have won all four games since, most recently Saturday's 3-1 defeat of Rayo Vallecano.

• The Blaugrana, who have lifted the Copa del Rey in the last four seasons, reached a sixth successive final with a 3-0 second-leg win at Real Madrid on 27 February, completing a 4-1 aggregate semi-final success.

• Barça also won 1-0 at Madrid in the Liga on 2 March, Ivan Rakitić scoring the only goal – his first in the league since 20 October.

• Lyon suffered a second successive away defeat five days after drawing with Barcelona, going down 2-0 at Monaco on 24 February. Saturday's 2-2 draw at Strasbourg made it three away games without a win.

• A 1-0 loss at Nice in OL's previous away fixture, on 10 February, ended their 13-match unbeaten away run in all competitions (W8 D5).

• Les Gones won their first three Coupe de France rounds away from home this season, at fifth-tier Bourges (0-2) and at top-tier Amiens (0-2) and Guingamp (1-2).

• Lyon beat Caen 3-1 in the Coupe de France quarter-finals on 27 February and will face Rennes at home in the semi-finals on 2 April.

• Moussa Dembélé, who struck twice against Strasbourg at the weekend, is Lyon's top scorer in Ligue 1 this season with 11 goals.
