Manchester City v Shakhtar Donetsk facts

Manchester City moved to the top of Group F with victory at Shakhtar Donetsk and are looking for a third straight win to consolidate their advantage in the section, although they have lost their last three home European fixtures.

• Shakhtar had never lost at home to English visitors but goals before half-time from David Silva and Aymeric Laporte were added to by Bernardo Silva 19 minutes from time to earn Josep Guardiola's side a second successive away European victory.

• That took City on to six points, one above Lyon – who won in Manchester on matchday one – and four clear of Shakhtar and Hoffenheim. City will therefore book their place in the round of 16 if they win and Hoffenheim lose in Lyon on matchday four.

Previous meetings
• The teams were paired together for the first time in the 2017/18 group stage, when home sides held the upper hand.

• City were 2-0 winners in Manchester on matchday two, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scoring at the start and end of the second half to secure the points.

• Josep Guardiola's side travelled to Ukraine for their final fixture with a place in the round of 16 already assured, but looking to make it six wins out of six in the section. • Having opened with an unexpected 2-1 loss at home to Lyon, City won by the same scoreline at Hoffenheim in their second fixture, David Silva scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute.

• The Lyon defeat means City have lost three successive European games in Manchester – all 2-1.

• The Ukrainian club's first two games both finished 2-2, Shakhtar twice coming from behind to draw with Hoffenheim on matchday one – the latter's UEFA Champions League debut – before letting slip a two-goal lead at Lyon.

• Shakhtar qualified as winners of the Ukrainian league, claiming the title for the 11th time in 2017/18, when they completed a domestic double for the second season in succession.

• Quarter-finalists in 2010/11, Shakhtar reached the last 16 of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League, losing to Roma on away goals (2-1 home, 1-0 away).

• Shakhtar lost three of their four away games in last season's competition, the exception a 2-1 success at Feyenoord on matchday three. They had won their previous five away games – all in the UEFA Europa League – before 2017/18.

• The Ukrainian side have got out of their group in three of their last five participations.

• Fernandinho was a Shakhtar player between 2005 and 2013 when he left for City, scoring 31 goals in 183 league outings. He was named Ukraine's Premier League player of the year in 2007/08, and amassed six league titles, four Ukrainian Cups and the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.

• City won by a five-goal margin for the fourth time in this season's Premier League with a 6-1 home defeat of Southampton on Sunday, Raheem Sterling scoring twice in a club match for the first time since 16 December 2017.

• With 33 goals this season, City have scored six more than any other side in this season's Premier League. The Southampton game was the 12th time they have notched five or more goals in a league game since Josep Guardiola took charge in 2016; no other side has done it more than six times in the same period.

• City had kept six successive clean sheets in the Premier League before the weekend, Danny Ings' 30th-minute penalty the first goal they had shipped in 630 minutes in the competition. The English champions have conceded only four goals in their first 11 Premier League games this season.

• Guardiola's side had also managed five clean sheets in a row in all competitions before conceding to Southampton.

• Sergio Agüero became only the third player, after Thierry Henry (175) and Wayne Rooney (183), to score 150 Premier League goals for a single club with his strike against Southampton. The Argentinian reached the mark in 217 games, more only than Alan Shearer (212).
